This class is designed to introduce the student to the fundamental elements of flatwater kayaking.  Learning basic kayak terminology, participating in equipment and safety discussions, and paddling technique demonstrations are all part of this class.  Students will have 2-2.5 hours of paddling time available in this program.


Pre-requisites: No previous kayaking or paddling experience is required. Participants should be 14 years of age or older.

Course Time:  This class runs approximately 4 hours.

Location:  Stoney Lakeside Park Lowell. MI

Part I-On-land activities

1.  Welcome and Introductions
2.  Course overview, paperwork, policies
3.  Kayaking Environments in Michigan
4.  Hypothermia, Cold Shock, Hyperthermia
5.  Dressing for Success-Clothing for Kayaking
6.  Accessories and Safety Equipment
7.  The big 3-Kayaks, Paddles, and PFD's
8.  Paddle set-up and use
9.  Entering and Exiting the kayak
10.Boat Fit and Skirt use

Part II- On-Water activities
1.  Wet Exit Demo by Instructor
2.  How to empty a kayak
3.  Kayak paddle strokes-Forward, Reverse, Sweeps, and Stops
4.  T-rescue assisted recovery demonstration
5.  Paddle Float solo recovery demonstration
6.  Kayak Roll recovery demonstration
7.  Debrief-Etiquette and Care for the environment

Part III-Open Demo Time

1.  Students will have access to Bill & Paul's demo fleet.  This is a great way to test out new found skills and more accurately assess the kayaks and their differences.  We'll have our SUP boards available to play with as well!
