The Bill & Paul’s/Caberfae Peaks YOUR TURN 2018 event was a glowing success despite less than ideal weather conditions.  Early in the week the resort received a lot of rain putting the event at risk. Some cold mid-week temps allowed Caberfae to make new snow for about 15 hours straight providing us a wintery surface to ski on.  Unfortunately, Friday morning brought another round of rain, dampening conditions, but not the spirit of the 15 gals who showed up for the program!

As breakfast was served and forms completed, Pete Meyer of Caberfae presented a bit of history on the ski resort.  Pete noted that by opening in 1937, Caberfae Peaks is one of the oldest operating ski resorts in the US.  Pete’s presentation was followed by the introduction of Lisa Ballard, our guest instructor and program leader for the day.  After introducing herself and her storied history with the sport of alpine skiing, Lisa spent an hour talking to our group about modern technology found in skis.  She did an amazing job explaining how skis work and introducing terms you might hear when shopping for skis. She taught the women about types of skis and what might be best for each skier.  The talk was a great education and was often referenced throughout the day.

Around 10am we headed to the demo tent staffed by our regional rep for ELAN skis, Ray.  Each skier was given the chance to replace their skis with a new pair of Elan women’s skis. Because the rain softened conditions, wider skis were fan favorites in the morning.  The gals were separated into three groups, each led by women instructors from Caberfae, and hit the slopes to work on skill development.  Lisa worked with two groups in the morning, introducing fun and challenging drills that helped the women with form and edge control. She would then videotape each skier in a group for analysis later.

Lunch was timely as many of the skiers started to feel the effects of skiing in rain.  Pete is now famous for doing the group’s laundry, offering to dry pants and jackets, during the break!  While enjoying a wonderful plate of soup, salad, and sandwich, Lisa provided skiers individual analysis of their run she taped.  This can sometimes be an intimidating experience yet Lisa has a way of positively delivering useful critique and all of the gals left smiling and anxious to head out and practice.

After finishing lunch and putting on dry clothes (Thanks Pete), the group returned to the hill where many switched skis for the afternoon.  Group three worked with Lisa while the first two groups spent time refining new skills.  On-hill activities wrapped up around 3 and the ladies headed back to the lodge for wrap up festivities.  Caberfae treated everyone to a complimentary apres ski beverage while Lisa analyzed the final groups video.

The day finished with a wonderful raffle filled with gorgeous prizes provided by Lisa’s sponsors. Items from Leki, Skea, Pistl, Transpack, Bolle, and Bill & Paul’s filled the table.  Names were drawn, prized delivered, and final photos were taken before Lisa and Ray whisked off to another event that evening.

Our event was blessed by a group of participants who love the sport and spirit of skiing (we know because they were smiling and laughing in the pouring rain!) and a guest host who’s experience and personality made everyone comfortable all day.  Big thanks go out to Caberfae Peaks and their amazing staff, particularly Jessica who served us throughout the day.  They truly rolled out the red carpet for this event.  Special thanks to Liz, Morgan, and Sarah, the talented and dedicated instructors who supported Lisa on the hill.  Finally, we want to thank Lisa Ballard and Elan skis, for choosing to partner with Bill & Paul’s for this unique and rewarding program.  Be sure to watch for the return of YOUR TURN in 2019!
