Finding Your Balance: Why This is the Summer to Try Stand-Up Paddleboarding
There is something entirely magical about being on the water. The rhythmic sound of your paddle dipping into the surface, the cool breeze, and the unique view you get when you're standing right in the middle of it all.
If you've been sitting on the shoreline watching stand-up paddleboarders glide effortlessly across our local lakes and rivers, you might have thought, "That looks amazing, but I'd probably fall right in." We're here to tell you a secret: You can absolutely do this. SUP is one of the most accessible, relaxing, and rewarding water sports out there. Here is everything you need to know to find your balance and get out on the water this season.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) — a water sport in which the rider stands upright on a large, buoyant board and uses a long single-bladed paddle to propel themselves across the water. Originating from Hawaiian surf culture, SUP is now one of the fastest-growing outdoor activities in the world, enjoyed on oceans, lakes, and rivers by people of all ages and fitness levels.
Why Choose Stand-Up Paddleboarding?
Unlike sports with steep learning curves, SUP offers instant gratification. But the benefits go way beyond just a fun afternoon activity:
- A New Perspective: Standing at your full height gives you a literal bird's-eye view into the water. You'll spot fish, underwater plants, and wildlife that you'd completely miss from the low seat of a kayak or canoe.
- The Ultimate Full-Body Workout (In Disguise): While it feels like a peaceful glide, paddleboarding activates your core, strengthens your legs for balance, and tones your arms and shoulders. It's fitness without the gym.
- Active Mindfulness: It is incredibly difficult to worry about your daily to-do list when you are focusing on the horizon and feeling the gentle sway of the water. It's pure stress relief.

Shop Now3 Beginner Steps to Perfect Balance
Ready to launch? Keep these three simple steps in mind for a successful first time out:
1. Start on Your Knees
Don't try to stand up right away. Wade out into calm, shallow water (about knee-deep so your board's fin doesn't hit the bottom). Mount the board from the side on your knees, right over the center carrying handle — this is the board's sweet spot for balance. Take a few paddle strokes while kneeling to get a feel for how the board moves.
2. Stand Up Slowly
When you feel steady, place your paddle across the board in front of you. Move from your knees to a low squat, positioning your feet hip-width apart on either side of the center handle. Keep your knees bent and slowly push yourself up into a standing position.
3. Look at the Horizon
The biggest mistake beginners make is staring down at their feet. If you look at your feet, you're likely going to follow your gaze right into the water! Keep your head up, eyes fixed on the horizon or the shoreline ahead. Looking forward naturally aligns your spine and stabilizes your core.
Enhance Your SUP Experience: Essential Add-Ons
Once you've got your board, a few key accessories will make every paddle safer, more comfortable, and more fun. Here's what we recommend:
